The Surrounding Area |

|
The Dona Sofia complex really does
enjoy the best of both worlds. Immediately in front is a broad, paved
promenade leading to a wide, clean, sandy beach with beds, umbrellas,
shower facilities and the usual range of water sports. Dotted along
the promenade are chiringuitos (Spanish fish restaurants) where you
can enjoy a spot of lunch or just a cool drink in the shade while
you watch the world go by. Restaurants, bars and cafes are plentiful
in the surrounding streets and walkways and cater to a cosmopolitan
clientele, serving anything from a good old English fry up to far
more exotic fare.
Just around
the corner is a large Crazy Golf course and there are plenty of small
shops, supermarkets and newsagents in the area supplying anything
from sun tan lotion to the Sun newspaper! Slightly further back
from the complex is a large supermarket selling a good range of
international and local products at very reasonable prices and,
just a bit further afield, visitors to Dona Sofia can now enjoy
the brand new shopping, restaurant and cinema complex (showing the
latest films in English) Parque Miramar.
In the evenings the Paseo (the longest in Andalucia!) is clean,
safe, well lit and pleasantly dotted with benches, statues and
greenery. Enjoy a stroll in the sea breeze to work up an appetite
for dinner or head towards Fuengirola centre and watch the bustle
of tourists and locals in their finery as they head off for an
night on the town. In the summer months the Paseo also plays host
to an eclectic mix of buskers, performers and street vendors so
there’s always
plenty to see and buy.
Heading towards Fuengirola centre you will notice (the further away
from Dona Sofia you get) that bars, restaurants and nightclubs begin
to proliferate. Finally you will reach the area known locally as
Fish Alley, opposite the port that features streets and streets
of bars and restaurants, one after the other, all catering to just
about every nationality and budget.
Surrounding Fish Alley are clothes shops, jewellers, shoe shops,
gift shops and a host of other establishments selling a bewildering
array of goods. For more up-market shopping, head for the Plaza
De La Constitution. As well as being recently refurbished into
a beautiful Church Plaza with shaded seating areas and stunning
water-feature, bordered by some delightful cafes, this Plaza is
also home to a host of designer boutiques and expensive shoe and
jewellery shops. If you prefer a bargain try one of the local markets.
The biggest (and arguably the best) is on the Feria ground between
Fuengirola and Los Boliches. This takes place on a Tuesday, with
an antiques market on the same site on a Saturday. On Sunday there
is a smaller market in the Port and most days of the week feature
a market some place along the Costa.
Active, sporty types will find plenty to occupy their time – both
in the immediate area and beyond. Water sports proliferate along
the beaches and Fuengirola Port is home to more unusual aquatic
pastimes such as parasailing, boat trips, scuba diving and yachting.
Golf courses litter the Costa. Your nearest is Mijas Golf –
about 5 minutes drive away – but there is so much choice you
could try a different one every day! There’s a Go-Carting
track (not just for the kids), horse-riding, an Aqua Park, and
a range of gyms - all fairly local. If you need to travel further
afield there are car and bike hire places just down from Dona Sofia
or, for more choice, in Fuengirola town centre, itself.
Children’s needs are well catered
for. They are positively welcomed in restaurants, child size menus
are usually available and in the summer months there are many activities
and specialized play areas for your little darlings on the beach.
The Aqua Park is a must, there is also Fuengirola Zoo, a big play
area near Fuengirola port with a Bowling Alley just round the corner
and it’s worth taking a trip to Tivoli World in Benalmadena
for a fun day out - and try the cable car that goes up the mountain
near there.
